Apartment Information
PAYMENT
Contrary to what was originally announced, you will NOT need to pay for your apartment
in cash when you check-in. We have arranged for the apartments to bill the conference,
so you will receive an "invoice" by email, allowing you to pay by credit card over
the web. We hope to have this system ready to accept payments by the start of NuFact,
and would appreciate your payment prior to the end of the Workshop, but it is not
necessary to pay before you check-in.
DIRECTIONS
The Campus Village is easy to reach by car, taxi or shuttle van. As you can see
on the map, it is located near the center of the UC Irvine campus (the large green
area).
1a) From LAX: Take Interstate 405 ("the San Diego Freeway") south to State Route
73 ("San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor") south. This freeway becomes a toll
road AFTER the exit for the University, and is visible at lower left of the campus
map.
1b) From SNA (Orange County/John Wayne Airport): There are two possible routes,
but the easiest for finding the Campus Village once you are at the University is
to follow the signs inside the airport for SR 73 south. Once you are on SR 73 south,
the directions are the same as those from LAX (but it is a 5 minute drive, rather
than an hour).
2) From SR 73 south (LAX or SNA) Take the Bison Avenue exit on SR 73. Then follow
Bison through several traffic signals, and across Peltason (the main ring road around
the campus). When you reach the end of Bison (it currently ends in a construction
site), turn left into parking lot 13 and go to the back. (This route is shown in
pink on the map).
CHECK-IN
You check-in at the Campus Village Community Center, located adjacent to parking
lot 13. You may check-in between 1 pm and 10 pm. If you will arrive later, phone
the Campus Village office directly, in advance, at (949) 824-7496 and they may be
able to help you. If absolutely necessary, and with at least 12 hours advance notice,
we can pick up your key for you during check-in hours and meet you after the check-in
is closed.
CHECK-OUT
Check-out is normally between 9 am and 11am daily. If you need special arrangements,
please ask the staff.
PARKING
As indicated on the website, parking is not included with the apartment rental -
if you want to park a car at the apartments, you will need to purchase a permit
($7/day) when you check in. Parking regulations are aggressively enforced at the
University, and if you park illegally there is a good chance you will receive a
citation. If you violate the regulations flagrantly (e.g. parking in a handicapped
space) your car could be towed. We have no way to intercede with the campus police
in such matters to reduce or waive any fines, so please park responsibly. Parking
at the Beckman Center (where the meetings are held) is free, and you do not need
a permit to park there.
TRANSPORTATION
The Beckman Center is a 5-10 minute walk from the apartments. We will, however,
provide shuttle service to the Campus Village. Shuttles going to the conference
hotel from the Beckman Center will drop off at the two normal University shuttle
stops serving the Campus Village (two yellow triangles on the attached map) first.
Shuttles carrying passengers from the conference hotel to the Beckman Center will
pick up at the same locations if they have space available.
CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST
A continental breakfast is provided each morning of scheduled meetings at the Beckman
Center, from 7:30-8:30. This is included in the registration fee, and primarily
intended for people staying at the Campus Village apartments (a full breakfast buffet
is included with rooms at the conference hotel). Feel free to arrive early and enjoy
a light breakfast. A full lunch buffet is provided each day during meetings at the
Beckman Center at no additional charge.
ABOUT THE APARTMENTS
Your apartment has two bedrooms, and is fully furnished. It includes a kitchen with
microwave, stove, refrigerator, dishes, silverware and cookware (but no corkscrews
- this is student housing, after all). Housekeeping, towel and linen service is
provided on weekdays (only). The apartments also have TV/DVD/stereo (the life of
a UCI student is rough indeed...). The only thing the apartments do NOT have which
you would expect to find at a hotel are the little bottles of shampoo (soap is provided).
NETWORKING
You should receive a temporary computer ID ("UCInet ID") when you check in at the
Campus Village. The apartments are equipped with wired ethernet, and I am told wireless
is also available. You will need to activate your temporary UCInet ID before gaining
access to any campus network. (Wireless networking is also available at the Beckman
Center, and should work without ID or registration). PHONE Your apartment has a
phone. Local calls (including calls off-campus) are free, but you will need a calling
card to make long-distance calls.
RESTAURANTS
On-campus dining is limited at the moment, due to renovation of the Student Center.
There are two cafeterias near the center of campus (BC's Cavern, building 500 on
the campus map, and The Phoenix Grill, building 214 on the campus map) which are
closed by dinner time and on weekends during the summer. The University Center (shopping
plaza, located near the top center of the map, accessed by a footbridge over Campus
Drive), is within 10 minute walking distance, and has a number of restaurants, however
(I especially recommend the Indian restaurant, Chakra).
SHOPPING
The University Center also has a Trader Vic's supermarket where you can purchase
groceries if you wish. Another supermarket, Albertsons, is located at the corner
of Campus Drive and California Avenue - a bit of a walk, but very close by car.
